Rwanda Reopens for Tourism

Last month as COVID 19 abates there were guidelines detailing how tourism activities will be carried out when the country reopened, the Rwanda Development Board announced on 17 June 2020 the reopening of the country's tourism activities. It comes in when COVID 19 struck hard at the tourism sector about.

The Board has also approved the reestablishment of local and international scheduled flights to Rwanda-this is the peak season for East African excursions. The country and the tourism sector will grow from a rise again. Together with the private sector, RDB offers Rwandans and foreign residents an enticing all-inclusive tourism package. Gorilla tracking

Tracking Mountain gorilla in their natural habitat is one of the most remarkable tourist activities in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. It is difficult to describe the simple exhilaration attached to first setting eyes on a wild mountain gorilla. Mountain Gorillas tracking is one of the most fascinating experience for travelers on safari in Rwanda, the magical one hour with the gorillas are undoubtedly expensive, and getting there can also be tiresome. The hike up to the mountain gorillas’ natural home of bamboo forests involves a combination of steep slopes, dense vegetation, slippery underfoot conditions, and high altitudes.

Number of Habituated Gorilla Families in Rwanda

There are 12 habituated mountain gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park namely Agasha group, Amahoro group, Susa group, Hirwa group, Kwitonda group, Umbano group, Karismbi group, Igisha group, Sabyinyo group, and Nyakagezi group. As Rwanda reopens for tourism there will be a reduction in the price of gorilla tracking permits for Rwandans, East African nationals residing in Rwanda and foreign residents in Rwanda, Gorilla tracking permits for Rwandan nationals and East African nationals residing in Rwanda will pay USD 200, foreign residents in Rwanda will pay USD 500 per person per trek and foreign non-residents coming with international planes will purchase gorilla tracking permits at USD 1,500 per person per trek.

Special packages are available to groups, families, and companies for other products in Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe National Park. Special precautionary measures are as follows

Domestic tourists visiting Nyungwe National Park and Volcanoes National Park are required to test negative for COVID 19 within 48 hours prior to visiting these attractions. A primate test center has been set up at petit stade Remera, Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali by appointment only; other test centers outside Kigali will be communicated as the demand grows.

All visitors traveling by chartered planes are expected to test negative for COVID 19 within 72 hours prior to arrival. Tourists will take will a second COVID 19 test prior to visiting any tourist attraction.

  • social distancing is a must in parks, lodges, and at the airport.

  • Only 8 travelers will be allowed to trek Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitats.

  • Only 6 travelers will be allowed to trek Chimpanzees in their respective habitats.

  • Travelers must test for COVID19 prior to travel.
